Tie-In Shelf

Tie-In Shelf

n. A single SHELF, often uppermost or just below the top, within a larger DISPLAY, typically in the FAST-WALL or EVZ, that is devoted to a different ITEM, but usually bears some obvious relationship to the ITEM featured in main DISPLAY. Also JUMP SHELF, PEEKABOO SHELF. See also BLACK RACK.

NOTE: Examples might include a Tie-in Shelf of squeeze mustard bottles or pickle relish amidst a larger DISPLAY of ketchup, or perhaps small cartons of fabric softener sheets in with jugs of laundry detergent—that sort of thing.

In this respect, a BLACK RACK and Tie-In Shelf perform similar functions. The idea is to motivate the customer to buy more by showing them two things that can be used together. Then, hopefully, their idea bulbs light up: “Oh! I need that too.”
